Africa-Press – Mozambique. Renowned Jazz saxophonist Moreira Chonguiça is celebrating International Jazz Day today at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM, the country’s largest hospital unit. Chonguiça will visit the Oncology (cancer) Department, then give a concert in the Orthopaedics Department amphitheatre.
The celebration follows in a tradition set by the ethnomusicologist and social activist since 2019, and will be attended by the HCM Board of Directors, the representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Mozambique, the diplomatic corps and cooperation partners, among other guests.
International Jazz Day was designated by UNESCO and is officially celebrated on 30 April to highlight jazz and its role in uniting people in all corners of the globe.
International Jazz Day is chaired and led by Irina Bokova, former Director-General of UNESCO, and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who is UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and president of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.
Moreira Chonguiça has since 2016 been a partner of UNESCO in the design and production of the International Jazz Day celebrations in Mozambique, and is also a partner of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz in New York, in the framework of the International Jazz Day celebrations.
Chonguiça was the first Mozambican musician to participate in the All-Star line-up for the International Jazz Day Global Concert, debuting in Tangier, Morocco in 2024.
