Mozambican choreographer Atanásio Nyusi dies

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican dancer and choreographer, Atanásio Nyusi, died today in Maputo, ‘Notícias Online’ has learned from a family source.

Atanásio excelled as a dancer at the National Company of Canto and Dance (CND), of which he was a founding member.

Former director of the Companhia Nacional de Canto e Dança (CNCD) David Abílio told Notícias Online that the death of the dancer and choreographer represents a great loss of “cultural heritage”.

Visibly shocked, Abilio said that Nyusi was mourned not only by the dance community, but also by the research and anthropology fields.

“Atanásio Nyusi passes away having assembled a rich collection of information not only about dance, but about Mozambican culture as a whole. He created the research area at the CNCD and trained hundreds of dancers. Not only that – he taught dance and dance technique, having benefited from a solid training in South Africa,” Abilio said.

A friend of Nyusi’s at the Companhia de Canto e Dança since the early 1980s, Abílio said he was “deeply saddened and hurt by the departure of a great patriot, who left a great legacy for the country”.
