Africa-Press – Mozambique. “The government confirms the kidnapping of Mozambican citizen Álvaro Simião Cossa in Kyiv, Ukraine, with ‘démarches’ to rescue him being currently underway,” reads a report brought by Rádio Moçambique this Wednesday.
This Wednesday, Councillor Minister at the Mozambican Embassy in Germany, Julião Langa, told Rádio Moçambique that the government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, was working with the Ukrainian embassy in South Africa to locate Álvaro Simião Cossa.
According to Langa, in addition to the Mozambicans studying in Ukraine, others like Cossa had been living there for many years. Official figures have not, however, been updated since 2014, when Mozambique ceased to have diplomatic representation in Ukraine.
Langa further noted that the 15 Mozambican students who fled the Russia-Ukraine conflict into Poland were all in good health and would soon be repatriated.
Álvaro Simião Cossa’s family in Kyiv has no information
Also today, TVM reports that, 48 hours after the alleged abduction of Alvaro Cossa, his family in Ukraine have no information of his whereabouts, and are avoiding all contact with the press. Family members in Mozambique, the report adds, are asking for swift government intervention to clarify the case.
Two days ago, Álvaro Simão Cossa is said to have been kidnapped on a street of Kyiv by two unknown hooded individuals while returning home from a supermarket not far from this home, TVM adds.
TVM further reports that it is unable to contact Alvaro Simão Cossa by any means and adds that his Facebook activity has ceased.
Cossa, a businessman who graduated in Economics in the University of Donetsk, was living in Ukraine for 30 years.
In recent days, he had often spoken to Mozambican media about the situation in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, O País online reports this Thursday that: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation confirms the kidnapping of Álvaro Cossa. A source from the institution informed “O País” that hooded strangers invaded the Mozambican’s residence in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, taking him and leaving his Ukrainian wife”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mozambique further assured ‘O País’ that it has made contact with the Mozambican Embassy in Russia, which also represents the country in Ukraine, with the aim of locating the victim and determining the causes of this event.
