Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican health authorities on Monday reported a further 113 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, bringing the total number of cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 153,787.

According to a Monday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 1,003,685 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 800 of them in the previous 24 hours.

687 of those tested yielded negative results. Of the 113 positive cases, 57 were men and 56 were women. As has been the case throughout this month, the overwhelming majority of cases – 90.3 per cent were from the far south, 68 from Maputo city and 34 from Maputo province. There were also four cases from Gaza, three from Inhambane, three from Manica, and one from Cabo Delgado.

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) was 14.12 per cent, a slight decline on Sunday’s rate of 14.79 per cent, and a slight increase on Saturday’s rate of 13.55 per cent.

Over the previous 24 hours, 12 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, but a further 14 cases were admitted, all of them in Maputo city.

The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres rose from 26 on Sunday to 27 on Monday. 22 of these patients were in Maputo city, four in Inhambane and one in Manica.

The release reported one further death from Covid-19. This victim was a 79 year old Mozambican man, who died in Maputo. The total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique now stands at 1,945.

Six people were declared to have made a full recovery from Covid-19 on Monday, all of them in Zambezia province. The total number of recoveries is now 149,964, or 97.5 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases rose from 1,768 on Sunday to 1,874 on Monday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 955 (51 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 589; Inhambane, 119; Gaza, 100; Manica, 43; Cabo Delgado, 25; Sofala, 13; Zambezia, nine; Tete, nine; Niassa, seven; and Nampula, five.

The Ministry also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 32,454 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated has now risen to 4,686,261, while 7,156,037 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
