Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican health authorities on Friday reported 174 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and only one death.
According to a Ministry of Health Friday press release, this victim was an 87 year old Mozambican man, who died in Maputo city. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 1,892.
Since the start of the pandemic, 873,870 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 2,187 of them in the previous 24 hours. 2,013 of these tests yielded negative results, and 174 people tested positive for the virus. The total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique has risen to 148,901.
The latest figures confirm the trend seen in recent weeks where most new cases come from the north of the country. Of Friday’s positive cases, 70.1 per cent were from the northern four provinces – 43 from Nampula, 36 from Cabo Delgado, 27 from Niassa and 16 from Zambezia.
The seven southern and central provinces provided 29.9 per cent of the new cases – 18 in Maputo city, 11 in Inhambane, eight in Manica, six in Maputo province, six in Gaza, three in Sofala and none at all in Tete.
The positivity rate (the proportion of those tested found to be carrying the coronavirus) on Friday was eight per cent, a decline on the 8.4 per cent reported on Thursday, and the 10.1 per cent on Wednesday.
The provinces with the highest positivity rates were all in the north – Niassa (24.8 per cent), Nampula (15.3 per cent), and Zambezia (14.3 per cent). Apart from Tete, where there were no positive cases at all, the lowest positivity rates were in Maputo city (2.6 per cent), and Manica (3.7 per cent).
In the same 24 hour period, 13 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (eight in Maputo, two in Cabo Delgado, and one each in Niassa, Manica and Gaza), while six new patients were admitted (three in Maputo, two in Manica and one in Cabo Delgado).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 facilities fell from 86 on Thursday to 78 on Friday. 29 of these patients (37.2 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also 17 patients in Nampula, 13 in Niassa, three each in Cabo Delgado, Zambezia, Manica and Matola, two each in Tete, Sofala and Inhambane, and one in Gaza.
Over the previous 24 hours, 320 people were declared to have made a full recovery from Covid-19 (138 in Maputo city, 88 in Gaza, 40 in Inhambane, 30 in Niassa and 24 in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 140,961, or 94.7 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 6,191 on Thursday to 6,044 on Friday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 1,980 (32.8 per cent of the total); Nampula, 1,540; Maputo province, 941; Cabo Delgado, 599; Niassa, 272; Zambezia, 255; Gaza, 217; Inhambane, 158; Manica, 45; Tete, 26; and Sofala, 11.
The Ministry release added that on Friday a further 32,924 people received their second dose of the vaccine against Covid-19. 1,703,881 people are now fully vaccinated against the disease, and 1,864,229 have received at least one dose.
