Africa-PressMozambique. Mozambique on Monday reported 20 Covid-19 deaths and surpassed 100,000 cases, with 1,373 newly diagnosed cases registered in the previous 24 hours, the Ministry of Health announced. The fatalities were all Mozambican nationals, aged between 15 and 84 years.

“We regret the notification of twenty (20) deaths in patients infected by the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours, 12 females and eight males, all of Mozambican nationality and whose ages vary between 15 and 84 years,” the Ministry of Health brief reads. Of these, one death was declared on July 10 (Saturday of the previous week) and one on July 17 (last Saturday); 12 deaths were declared on July 18 (last Sunday) and six on July 19 (Monday).

These deaths bring the Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 1,138.

With the newly diagnosed cases reported on Monday, the total number of coronavirus cases officially reported since the outbreak rose to 100,785, of which 76% have recovered.

By Monday, the country had 22,804 active cases of the disease and 481 hospitalised patients.

A total of 673,459 suspected cases were tested in Mozambique, 3,397 of them between Sunday and Monday.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 4,093,263 deaths worldwide, among more than 190.3 million cases of infection by the new coronavirus, according to the most recent update from Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, with variants currently identified in the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil and Peru.
