Africa-PressMozambique. The Mozambican health authorities reported 50 new case of the Covid-19 respiratory disease over the past weekend (28 on Saturday and 22 on Sunday).

There was one Covid-19 death on Saturday, an 87 year old Mozambican women who died in Maputo, and no deaths were reported on Sunday. The Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique now stands at 1,922.

According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 917,886 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 653 of them in the previous 24 hours.

631 of the tests gave negative results, while 22 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brings the number of people diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique to 150,985.

12 of Sunday’s positive cases were women and ten were men. Three were children under the age of 15 and four were over 65 years old. 11 of the new cases (50 per cent) came from Zambezia province. There were also five cases from Niassa, three from Cabo Delgado, two from Gaza and one from Inhambane. No positive cases were reported from any of the other six provinces,

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Sunday was 3.4 per cent – up from 1.9 per cent on Saturday and two per cent on Friday.

Broken down by province, by far the highest positivity rate was found in Zambezia, with 31.4 per cent, followed by Niassa with 7.6 per cent.

Over the same 24 hour period, four Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, three in Maputo and one in Niassa. No new cases were admitted to any of the country’s hospitals.

The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 23 on Saturday to 19 on Sunday. Seven of these were in Nampula, four in Niassa, three in Gaza, two in Manica, and one each in Maputo, Matola and Inhambane,

The Ministry release also reported that on Sunday a further 26 people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19 (15 in Cabo Delgado and 11 in Inhambane). The total number of recoveries now stands at 147,876, or 97.9 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases fell slightly, from 1,187 on Saturday to 1,183 on Sunday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 616 (52.1 per cent of the total); Nampula, 314; Cabo Delgado, 99; Maputo province, 38; Niassa, 33; Gaza, 27; Zambezia, 24; Inhambane, 24; Tete, three; Manica, three; and Sofala, two.

Over the previous 24 hours, 3,242 people received their second dose of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine against Covid-19. To date, 1,789,753 people have been fully vaccinated, and 1,973,519 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
