Mozambique and Kenya: Presidents want priority for tea, sugar, coffee processing

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Presidents William Ruto and Filipe Nyusi met in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, on Thursday on the sidelines of the African Food Summit.

The joint intention to focus on processing some agricultural sectors was expressed today in a statement distributed by the Kenyan presidency.

William Ruto highlighted the importance of having regional blocks that facilitate the movement of people and goods, and called on all countries to sign the tripartite agreement between the Southern African Development Community (SADC), East African Community (EAC) and the organization of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

The ratification of the ‘tripartite alliance’ will serve to unite the three regional blocs, he highlighted in the communiqué.

“This will provide an improved framework for trade and investment without unnecessary hurdles,” President Ruto concluded.

The meeting between Nyusi and Ruto followed other initiatives to bring closer together the two countries, which signed a general cooperation agreement in 2021.

Still in 2021, Kenya inaugurated its High Commission in Maputo, the country’s first diplomatic representation in Mozambique.
