Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s National Roads Administration (ANE) will from November tighten its campaign intended to control the weight per axle of heavy vehicles using the country’s roads.
A press release issued by ANE, indicates that the government body will resort to fixed weighbridges set up on various roads and also several mobile units, after finding an increasing trend to violate the weight limits established under Mozambican law.
The inspection will be carried out by brigades including staff from ANE, REVIMO (the public company that operates many of the main roads), the Road Transport National Institute (INATRO) and the police, in a bid to protect the country’s road network against early and rapid degradation caused by excessive weight.
The transport of cargo by roads in Mozambique is governed by a decree of 2008 which fixes the maximum limit per axle that vehicles are allowed to carry. However, the decree has been widely disregarded with damaging effects on the country’s roads and bridges.
Under the legislation, in addition to fines, any vehicle carrying excessive weight is obliged to unload some of its cargo at the weighbridge that detected the vehicle was overweight. That cargo remains the responsibility of the vehicle’s owner.
The ANE urges cargo transporters to comply with the guidelines of the regulations; otherwise they will face severe penalties under the law.
