Mozambique: Another fatal road accident in Gaza province leaves five dead, seven injured

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Five people lost their lives and seven others were injured after another road accident on national road number 1, the country’s main road, in southern Mozambique, an official source told Lusa on Monday.

The accident occurred at 04:30 a.m. on Saturday when a passenger minibus crashed and overturned in Macia district, Gaza province, said local police spokesman, Carlos Macuacua.

“Apart from the speed, there are indications that the driver was driving under fatigue. We are also working to find out what happened because a minibus should not be travelling at this time on that stretch of road, according to the law,” he added.

In addition to the deaths, seven people were injured, two of whom are in serious condition and continue to be assisted at the local hospital.

The new accident comes at a time when road accidents on Mozambique’s main highway are a concern for the authorities, especially in the south, following two serious accidents that killed a total of 50 people on the southern section of the road in the last four years.

The road accident situation in Mozambique is described by several non-governmental organisations as dramatic.

On average, at least 1,000 people die each year in road accidents on Mozambican roads, according to figures provided to Lusa in May by the Mozambican Association for Road Accident Victims (AMVIRO).
