Africa-Press – Mozambique. Dom Alexandre José Maria dos Santos, the first archbishop and cardinal of the Catholic Church, a native of Mozambique, died on Wednesday.
Dom Alexandre was Archbishop of Maputo between 1975 and 2003, and was Archbishop Emeritus of this diocese.
During his ministry he was committed to the cause of peace, having directly contributed to the end of the civil war in 1992.
Dom Alexandre dos Santoo contributed to greater access to education, having founded the Universidade São Tomás de Moçambique (USTM) in 2007.
He supported social causes, having been one of the founders and the first president of Caritas de Moçambique.
In recent years he made his contribution through the Fundação Cardinal Dom Alexandre José Maria dos Santos.
