Africa-Press – Mozambique. A new company will be managing the Backbone project, comprising around 1,400 kilometres of electricity transmission line from Tete to Maputo, crossing the provinces of Sofala, Inhambane and Gaza.
To this end, the corporate identity and institutional image of Sociedade Nacional de Transporte de Energia, SA (STE), a company created under the National Energy Strategy and wholly owned by Electricidade de Moçambique, was launched in Maputo yesterday.
This strategy aims to guarantee universal access to energy, reinforcing Mozambique’s position as a regional electricity generation hub and diversifying the national energy matrix to contribute to the country’s industrial and socio-economic development.
Speaking at the launch of the new corporate identity, EDM executive director Francisco Inroga said that the STE would focus on transporting electricity with safety and quality, reducing losses in the transport system.
Mozambique Backbone Transmission System Project
The Backbone project consists of a double transmission line from Tete province in central Mozambique to the capital, Maputo, in southern Mozambique and the interconnected Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) power network.
It will transport the electricity generated in new hydro power plants from Mphanda Nkuwa (1,500 MW) and Cahora Bassa (North Bank, 1,245 MW).
It will comprise a 400kV HVAC (high voltage alternative) line and a 800 kV HVDC (high voltage direct) line to supply the major consumption zones within Mozambique and link to the South African market.
