Africa-PressMozambique. After three days in which no deaths from Covid-19 were reported in Mozambique, the disease claimed a further victim on Friday.

According to a Ministry of Health press release, the victims was a 41 year old man who died in the southern province of Gaza. This brings the Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 1,925.

Since the start of the pandemic, 924,272 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,479 of them in the previous 24 hours.

1,460 of the tests yielded negative results, and 19 people tested positive for the virus. This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 151.080. Of the new cases identified on Friday, 11 were women and eight were men. Two were children under the age of 15.

Six of the new cases were from the northern province of Cabo Delgado, and six were from Maputo city. There were two cases each from Nampula, Inhambane and Gaza, and one case from Maputo province. No positive cases were reported from the other five provinces.

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Friday was 1.3 per cent. This compares with one per cent on Thursday, 1.8 per cent on Wednesday, two per cent on Tuesday, and 1.2 per cent on Monday.

Over the same 24 hour period, three Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (one in Maputo, one in Inhambane and one in Nampula) and one new case was admitted (in Gaza).

The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities fell from 11 on Thursday to eight on Friday. Three of these patients were in Niassa, and one person was hospitalised in each of Maputo, Matola, Nampula, Manica and Gaza. The Covid-19 wards in the other five provinces were empty.

The Ministry release also reported that a further 33 people were declared to have made a full recovery on Friday (16 in Nampula, 11 in Zambezia and six in Inhambane. The total number of recoveries now stands at 148,099, or 98 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 1,067 on Thursday to 1,052 on Friday. The geographical distribution of these cases was as follows: Maputo city, 568 (54 per cent of the total); Nampula, 277; Cabo Delgado, 123; Gaza, 20; Niassa, 17; Inhambane, 17; Zambezia, 16; Manica, six; Maputo province, five; and Tete, three. Sofala remains the only province where there no active Covid-19 cases.

The Ministry added that, in the same 24 hour period, 2,423 people took their second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19. To date, 1,818,884 people have been fully vaccinated against the disease, and 1,973,519 have taken at least one dose of the vaccine.
