Africa-Press – Mozambique. The board of the Confederation of Businesspeople of the Community of Portuguese-language Countries (CE-CPLP) on Tuesday demanded Mozambique urgently adopt measures against kidnappings that have occurred in the country and exemplary sanctions against those responsible.
“Because security constitutes one of the fundamental bases for the construction and consolidation of our community, we demand the competent authorities, in the particular case of Mozambique, but also of the other CPLP countries, the urgent adoption of effective measures that prevent the repetition of similar situations, as well as the rapid and satisfactory solution of these cases, punishing those responsible,” according to a letter sent to the executive secretary of the CPLP.
Signed by all representatives of the CE-CPLP in Portuguese-speaking countries and by all members of the executive committee of the CPLP, this note of ‘Appeal to member countries of the CPLP against kidnapping in Mozambique’ was also sent to the ambassador representing Mozambique in the CPLP.
The text said that the CPLP repudiates attacks of this type that jeopardise social progress and damage the country’s image.
“Security, as a fundamental asset of any nation, becomes even more indispensable in attracting the investment needed to create wealth and jobs, irreplaceable pillars of economic and social development,” the statement said.
Last week, two people, a doctor and a catering businessman, were kidnapped less than an hour apart in the Mozambican capital.
In December, the Mozambican president announced the possibility of creating an anti-kidnapping police unit to combat the crime wave in Mozambique’s main cities, with more than 10 cases registered in 2020.
“We reiterate the urgent need to combine all efforts, at all levels, to resolve the case in question, given its exemplary nature, as well as to establish, in general, political, legislative and police measures to ensure the safety of all citizens and in particular those who are most exposed, due to their business or professional activity,” the text sent to Lusa said.
