Africa-Press – Mozambique. The death toll following cyclone Gombe in Mozambique has risen from 17 to 20, indicates the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) based on the latest data from the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD).
According to an IOM bulletin, in the affected provinces (Nampula and Zambezia) there are at least 400,175 people affected, 82 injured and 20 dead, along with damage to 301 schools, 691 classrooms and 17 health centres.
An estimated 24,000 people have been displaced.
According to estimates, the homes of 77,279 families have been partially or totally destroyed in the neighbourhoods assessed so far, with some places still inaccessible.
Storm Gombe reached the Mozambican coast in the early hours of Friday morning as an intense cyclone with torrential rain and winds of 165 kilometres per hour, with gusts exceeding 200.
The storm hit Mozambique three years after cyclones Idai and Kenneth hit the central and northern regions of the country in what was one of the most severe rainy seasons in living memory.
