Mozambique: EDM adopts simplified procedure for power connection

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s publicly owned electricity company, EDM, on Thursday in Maputo launched a mass connection and simplified procedure project for new consumers across the country.

Under the new approach, which is much more simplified and automated, EDM teams will inspect neighbourhoods to compile data about power needs by household. Resorting to mobile phones, clients will request new connections, whereas previously clients had to visit the company’s offices to submit their requests and wait for the EDM staff to come to their homes.

Speaking after the launch of the project, Francisco Inroga, the EDM Executive Administrator for Commercial, Distribution and Computing Services, said that the move will reduce the amount of time clients wait for the new connections to be established.

The company, he added, wants to fast-track electricity contracts and bring EDM even closer to the consumers. EDM also wants to reduce the bulk of complaints as a result of pending contracts.

“This is a government initiative, through which we want to ensure mass electrification. EDM wants to meet clients’ expectations through the establishment of direct contracts on the ground, without any need for them going to the company,” he declared, adding that EDM wants to connect, by the end of 2030, about 320,000 consumers every year.

Issufo Somar, the EDM Commercial Director, explained that under the previous approach clients would wait about seven to 15 days to establish an electricity contract, but after the new procedure the process will be concluded within a few minutes.

“The great advantage is the reduction of bureaucracy and it is also comfortable for the clients who no longer have to move and will receive the contract the next day. Furthermore, clients can purchase power in less than an hour,” Somar said.
