Mozambique: EDM connects Mazucane to national power grid

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s publicly owned electricity company, EDM, on Friday connected to the national grid the administrative post of Mazucane, in Chongoene district, in the southern province of Gaza.

This was the 37th out of 45 administrative posts to be connected by the end of 2024.

Budgeted at over 37 million meticais (578,000 US dollars, at the current exchange rate), as part of the government’s “Energy for All” Programme, the electrification consisted of 38 kilometers of medium voltage line, three 160kVA and two 100 kVA transformer posts, 12 kilometers of low voltage line and 150 lampposts for public lighting.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said the new line is an important step resulting from the government’s efforts to expand social and economic infrastructures in a bid to leverage the country’s economy and people’s welfare, focusing on rural areas.

“The government will spare no efforts to electrify the country, especially the rural areas where the majority of the people live,” Nyusi said. He added that the government will make further efforts to light every region of the national territory.

After the conclusion of the electrification drive of administrative posts, over 2.5 million households will have access, for the first time, to power by the end of 2021 and over 3.5 million by the end of the 2024.

The government, he stressed, will increase electricity generation with an additional 600 megawatts, as well as building new transmission lines which will enable Mozambique to consolidate its position as a regional power hub.

Nyusi also inaugurated two photovoltaic power plants in the district of Chibuto in Changanine and Alto Changane with the capacity to generate 72 and 115 megawatts respectively.
