Mozambique was chosen from a total of seven candidates.
The other states elected to represent Africa on the Executive Council for the period 2021-2025 are South Africa, Cape Verde, Morocco and Zambia.
Nigeria and Ghana were not elected.
The election is expected to contribute to the recovery of Africa post Covid-19, empowering rural communities to make tourism a true instrument for generating wealth.
Mozambique’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Eldevina Materula, who was at the meeting said: “At a time when we are experiencing one of the worst crises in world tourism, this is one of the great victories we have achieved, and will greatly help to leverage our tourism.”
“It is also a continent-wide response and recognition of Mozambique’s agenda for the development of African tourism,” the minister remarked.
