Mozambique Elections: CC to proclaim results of repeat local elections on Saturday

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Constitutional Council (CC) of Mozambique will proclaim on Saturday at 10 a.m. the results of the repeat of the December 10 municipal elections in four municipalities in the country, the institution announced today.

The proclamation of the results by the Constitutional Council, the last body of appeal for the electoral process, will be made in Maputo by the CC president, judge counsellor Lúcia Ribeiro, but it was once again marked by criticism from the opposition and civil society with allegations of electoral fraud, to similar to the first vote, on October 11th.

A total of 53,270 voters were called to repeat the vote at 75 polling stations on December 10 to choose new mayors in four Mozambican municipalities.

The repetition of the vote on October 11th took place in 18 tables in Nacala-Porto (Nampula province), three in Milange and 13 in Gurúè (Zambézia) and in all 41 tables in Marromeu (Sofala), four municipalities in which the process election was not validated by the Mozambican Constitutional Council, due to irregularities.

According to the National Elections Commission (CNE) of Mozambique, repeating the local elections cost 41 million meticais (595 thousand euros).

The electoral commission said that members of the polling stations who were involved in illegal activities in the October 11 elections were removed from the new vote.

The October elections were strongly contested by the opposition and civil society, who denounced alleged “mega-fraud”.

The Mozambican CC proclaimed, on 24 November, the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) as the winner of the municipal elections on 11 October in 56 municipalities, against the previous 64 announced by the CNE, with Renamo winning four, and ordered repeat elections in four others.

According to the CC ruling, approved unanimously, read by judge counsellor Lúcia Ribeiro, Frelimo maintained its victory in the country’s two main cities, Maputo and Matola, in which Renamo claimed to be the winner, despite cutting around 60 thousand votes the total allocated to the party in power.
