Africa-Press – Mozambique. More than 20 neighbourhoods in at least four municipal districts in the country’s capital (KaMubukwana, KaMavota, KaMaxaquene and KaLhamankulo) were left in the dark on Wednesday night during unexplained power cuts.

The outages occurred at around 9:00 p.m. as votes were being counted in polling stations following the local elections.

Laulane, Bagamoio, Inhagoia A and B, 3 de Fevereiro, Hulene, Mahotas, Romão, Albazine, Zimpeto, George Dimitrov and Magoanine A, B and C were among the Maputo neighbourhoods affected. Voting officers had to use their cell phone flashlights to continue working.

In some neighbourhoods, such as Zimpeto, Magoanine A, B and C, the blackout lasted until 05:30 a.m. this (Thursday) morning, while other neighbourhoods suffered repeated outages lasting as long as two hours.

At the time of going to press, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has not issued any statement explaining the reasons for the widespread blackouts.
