Mozambique: Flood alert for 8 districts of Sofala and Manica

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Committee of the Búzi and Púnguè River Basins has warned of high risks of flooding in the coming months in eight districts in the provinces of Sofala and Manica, which could affect 1,240,000 people.

These are the districts of Búzi, Beira, Dondo, Nhamatanda, Chibabava, Gorongosa, in Sofala, and Mossurize and Sussundega, in Manica province.

António Melembe, the spokesperson for the meeting, said that several actions to reduce the impact of the rains were underway, under the aegis of the governments of the eight districts.

“In terms of readiness, we can say we’re about 80 to 90 percent. We are already working and there are only a few more steps to be at 100%,” he said.

The Special Session of the Committee of the Búzi and Pungwe River Basins was convened to review the weather forecasts and Contingency Plan for the 2021/22 rainy season.
