Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas, is in Uganda for the 19th Mid-Term Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), being held from 15 to 16 October in Kampala, where yesterday she stated that “only through genuine unity, solidarity and sustained cooperation can we build a fairer, more equitable and peaceful world”.
Speaking at the NAM Mid-Term Ministerial Review Meeting held under the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”, Minister Lucas reaffirmed Mozambique’s commitment to the founding principles of the movement, namely, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, peaceful co-existence, and mutual respect among nations, regardless of size or power.
She also reiterated support for the main priorities of the movement, including increased investment in education and digital inclusion to bridge the technology gap, debt relief and financial reform, and fairer trade systems.
At the meeting, Minister Lucas urged non-aligned countries to develop innovative strategies and policies to address emerging global challenges, while reaffirming collective commitment to the principles adopted in Bandung.
She gratefully recalled the unwavering solidarity and support offered by NAM members during Mozambique’s liberation struggle for independence and its journey of nation-building and development.
“Today, Mozambique continues to trust and value this spirit of solidarity as we face new and contemporary challenges, notably the devastating scourge of terrorism and the severe impacts of climate change, which threaten not only national and regional stability but also the very foundations of sustainable development and lasting peace and justice,” she added.
She expressed her gratitude to the NAM Coordinating Bureau for its steadfast dedication to promoting multilateralism, peace and cooperation among our nations.
On the sidelines of the event, Minister Lucas was received by the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, where matters of mutual interest were discussed. She also held bilateral meetings with the ministers of foreign affairs of Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan, exchanging views on strengthening relations of friendship and cooperation.
Uganda is the Chair of NAM for the period 2024–26. India is a founding member of the movement, which brings together 121 developing countries on a platform of historical significance. India remains committed to the principles and values of the movement.
