Mozambique: Foreign minister meets UN general assembly president

Africa-PressMozambique. Mozambique’s foreign minister met yesterday with the president of the 76th United Nations General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, a statement from the Mozambican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation said on Wednesday.

“The audience served for Minister Verónica Macamo to inform and explain the decision of the Mozambican government to apply for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council,” the statement said.

As well as discussing Mozambique’s application for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council, Macamo addressed aspects related to the management of the pandemic and defence, at a time when, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community, Mozambican forces are trying to halt terrorist incursions by armed groups in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

“President Shahid praised the commitment of the Mozambican government to combat terrorism and Covid-19, expressed the support of the United Nations in the fight against these evils and assured the endorsement of his country, the Maldives Islands, to the Mozambican candidacy to the UN Security Council,” the statement said.

According to the document, on today’s agenda, the Mozambican head of diplomacy has meetings scheduled with the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office, Vladimir Voronkov, and the foreign ministers of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, and Singapore,Vivian Balakrishnan.
