Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican health authorities announced on Monday that, so far, no cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease caused by the omicron variant of the coronavirus have yet been detected.

According to a Monday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 976,445 people have been tested for the coronavirus, 442 of them in the previous 24 hours.

418 of these tests gave negative results, while four people tested positive for the coronavirus – but not for the omicron variant. The positive cases were two men and two women, aged between 34 and 53. Three were diagnosed in Maputo city and one in Maputo province.

Over the same 24 hour period, no Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, but two new cases were admitted. The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities rose from two on Sunday to three on Monday, all of them in Maputo city.

After four days with no Covid-19 fatalities, the Ministry reported one death on Monday. The victim was a 53 year old Mozambican woman, who died in Matola.

Seven people made a full recovery from the disease, four in Inhambane and three in Gaza. The total number of recoveries now stands at 149,492, or 98.1 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 95 on Sunday to 91 on Monday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Cabo Delgado, 26; Nampula, 19; Maputo city, 19; Niassa, eight; Maputo province, six; Zambezia, five; Manica, five; and Gaza, three. In the other three provinces – Tete, Sofala and Inhambane – there were no active cases at all.

The Ministry reported that, in the previous 24 hours, a further 26.931 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease is now 3,858.834, while 6,535,786 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The Ministry urged all citizens who have received the first dose of the vaccine to make their way to the nearest vaccination centre for the second dose, by 20 December, when the current phase in the national vaccination campaign is scheduled to end.
