Africa-Press – Mozambique. The continuous commitment to the development of renewable energies in Mozambique is at the top of the Mozambican executive’s priorities, guaranteed the Deputy National Director of Energy at the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, Marcelina Mataveia, on Tuesday during a conference on renewable energies in Mozambique.
“The Government of Mozambique is committed to the development of renewable energies,” said Mataveia, who noted that the orientation towards self-consumption constituted an asset for the country, as already foreseen in the electricity law under review.
Under the theme, “Renewable Energy for Self-Consumption in Mozambique”, the virtual conference focused on the potential of the energy market for self-consumption in Mozambique, with emphasis on the commercial and industrial sector and the characterisation of market demand.
In his intervention, the ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Mozambique, Antonio Sánchez-Benedito Gaspar, highlighted that self-consumption solutions are of capital importance for “economic growth and the creation of jobs and income-generating activities for sustainable development”.
Antonio Gaspar also said that the European Union was preparing a new financing instrument for investment in renewable energy – the specific national platform of the ElectriFI program for Mozambique.
GET.invest is a European programme which supports investment in decentralised renewable energy projects, supported by the European Union, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and Austria.
With additional support from the EU and Germany, GET.invest has been operating a country window in Mozambique since 2019, allowing it to focus specifically on the Mozambican energy sector, as part of PROMOVE Energia – a comprehensive strategy to support access to sustainable and affordable energy in rural areas.
In the opening session, Thierry Kühn, Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy in Mozambique, noted that the event represents “an important milestone in achieving national targets for access to sustainable energy for all by 2030 (…) and a contribution to climate goals, as mentioned by the [Mozambican] prime minister during his speech at the United Nations conference in Glasgow”.
The event was organised by the Lusophone Association of Renewable Energies (ALER) and the Mozambican Association of Renewable Energies of Mozambique (AMER), within the framework of the European GET.invest program in Mozambique.
ALER is a non-profit association whose mission is to promote renewable energies in Portuguese-speaking countries, especially in Portuguese-speaking African countries.
