Africa-Press – Mozambique. Lutero Simango, leader of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) parliamentary bench, on Friday (10/09) formally announced his candidacy for the presidency of the party.
“We got together and decided to submit Lutero Simango’s candidacy proposal for president of the party,” said Rosália Macate, president of the MDM Women’s League in Sofala province.
Macate was speaking to the media after a group of MDM members, all Simango’s representatives, formalised the politician’s candidacy for the presidency of Mozambique’s third-largest political party.
Lutero Simango’s brother, Daviz Simango, died in February after 11 years as president of the MDM.
“We are supporting Lutero with the conviction that he will unite the MDM party comrades, from the bottom to the top, because he is the son of this party,” Macate declared.
Lutero Simango is the second candidate for the presidency of the MDM to emerge, following the organization’s general secretary, José Domingos. Parliament member Silvério Ronguane has also expressed his intention to run, but has not yet formalized his candidacy.
The MDM controls only six seats in the Assembly of the Republic. Among the municipalities, the party holds only Beira.
