Mozambique: Man allegedly sets wife on fire

Africa-PressMozambique. A man beat his wife and set her on fire in Nampula province, northern Mozambique, the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) told Lusa on Wednesday.

“The complaint was made on Monday by the victim’s brother. The husband’s whereabouts are still unknown,” PRM spokesman for Nampula, Dércio Samuel, reported.

The man allegedly beat his wife, bound her with a metal chain and set her on fire after dousing her with petrol.

“I found her in hospital, in a very critical condition,” the victim’s brother Jarnete Viquelque was quoted by Televisão de Moçambique (TVM) as saying.

The couple had had problems, he added, but he had thought that there had been a reconciliation.

The victim is in intensive care in Nampula Central Hospital, where health authorities describe her as having suffered serious injuries.
