Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) may receive from the European Union (EU) a further consignment of non-lethal equipment for use in the fight against Islamist terrorists in the northern province of Cabo Delgado by the end of this year.

According to the Public Relations Officer for the European Union Training Mission (EUTM-Mozambique), Ricardo Carvalho, interviewed by AIM, the equipment includes personal protective material, such as helmets and bulletproof vests, knee pads, night binoculars, boots, GPS, and tents.

“This initiative will enable the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) to train their own soldiers in this area of Special Forces, marines and commandos”, Carvalho said, in the context of Europe Day celebrations, which will take place on May 9.

In addition to training Mozambique’s special forces, including the Marine Rapid Reaction Force, the Air Force and the Commandos, EUTM-Mozambique is also training trainers within the FADM.

“It is certain that the European authorities will be analyzing and will decide at the highest levels whether this support can be given and in what form. A decision on the matter is expected in the next few weeks”, he said.

According to Carvalho, the 27 member states that make up the European Union will decide within the next few days whether or not to renew the mandate of the European Mission in Mozambique, which ends on September 9.

Since the EUTM-Mozambique arrived, the mission has trained 1,600 soldiers and 11 rapid reaction units.
