Africa-PressMozambique. People displaced by the war that has raged in the northern province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017 will receive a gift of 156 tonnes of rice over the next few days, Carta de Moçambique reports. The donation was made by Japan’s Mitsui Group, through its subsidiary ETG, the group’s agricultural company.

The formalisation of the delivery, valued at US$100,000, took place last Friday, July 2, at the offices of the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) in Maputo, and was attended by the Director General of Mitsui in Mozambique, Yota Orii, and Gabriel Belém Monteiro, Deputy President of the INGD.

In his intervention, the head of ETG highlighted his “great satisfaction” in making this donation, saying it was the group’s intention to “continue to contribute to the development of Mozambican society”.

“This was the Mitsui group’s fourth donation to the INGD,” he noted. “The first was in 2015, for flood victims. The second was in 2019, after Cyclone Idai, and the third the same year, after Cyclone Kennedy. The first two were in monetary value, the last two in foodstuffs.”

Speaking for the INGD, Belém Monteiro thanking Mitsui for the donation and lauded the company for standing by the INGD in the search for solutions to communities’ problems.

“Once again, we are facing an enormous gesture of solidarity with our brothers in Cabo Delgado,” Monteiro said. “ETG supported these communities at the time of Cyclone Kenneth, and are now supporting them in another difficult situation. It means that they are on the side of the Government and [against] the suffering of our communities. ETG is an example for other companies. Companies should not only pursue profit, but also exhibit social concern and solidarity with the most needy.”
