Mozambique: Niassa INGD will not assist families returning to flood risk areas

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Niassa has warned that it will not provide any support to families who return to areas at risk of flooding in Cuamba and Mecanhelas districts if they are affected by disasters again this rainy season.

Despite the allocation of plots for housing in the highlands, some families have returned to the banks of the Muanda and Namutimbwa rivers in Cuamba, and of Lake Chirua in Mecanhelas.

In Mecanhelas, 276 plots are available, but there is resistance from families to occupy them, and in Cuamba, some of the families resettled in the Njato neighbourhood have returned to areas prone to flooding.

Subsequently, the INGD delegate for Niassa, Friday Taibo, stressed that there would be no further support for these families if they are affected by floods a second time.

In Cuamba district, 4,000 people are expected to be affected by the floods, and in Mecanhelas, a survey of the number of people likely to be affected is currently underway.
