Africa-PressMozambique. In reaction to the road accident in Maluana, Manhiça district, the president of the Order of Engineers of Mozambique (OEM) has advocated greater investment in national roads and their maintenance to guarantee road safety.

The most tragic traffic accidents are often recorded on the country’s national road system.

While admitting that there has been investment in the road sector since 2000, more needs to be done so that these roads offer safety to motorists, according to president of the Order of Engineers of Mozambique, Ibraimo Remane said on Sunday.

“As far as the pavement [road surface] itself is concerned, [the national road system] is already starting to need investment. For example, the Matola–Namaacha Road (EN2) already needs major repairs. Vehicles are already avoiding this road because of the number of potholes it has, so more investment and more care in this aspect is necessary. As for the EN1, there are sections that are in reasonable condition, but there are others that are in terrible state, especially in the Zandamela area, which already needs intervention. But there must be funds for this purpose,” Remane says

Remane also advocates greater responsibility among bus drivers. “Transport drivers do not respect road signs. They overtaking on hills and in speed limit zones, and travelling at 80, 100 to 120km/h, because they know they won’t be held responsible. There are ways to control the maximum speed limit and we are not going for the minimum limit, but for the maximum, in this case, 100 km/h. If a passenger transporter exceeds this speed, they should be punished, so that accidents like Machiça do not occur [again].”

The improvement of signage and lighting are other urgent road problems, especially on National Road Number One [EN1], Remane said.
