Africa-Press – Mozambique. Passenger minibuses (“chapas”) in the city of Pemba stopped work this Friday morning (18-03) in protest at the rise in fuel prices.
A situation that seemed likely to escalate into violence was responded to with tear gas by the police.
Miramar reporters saw citizens travelling long distances on foot as a result of the stoppage.
Drivers, their arms crossed, demanded either a reduction in the price of fuel or an urgent review of the “chapa” tariff.
They argue that the first day of the new fuel prices resulted in heavy losses.
Talks were taking place this morning between the drivers and the transporters’ association.
