Maputo, Aug. 6, 2021 (Lusa) – The Mozambican police announced on Friday it had detained 15 citizens of Malawi for illegal immigration and presenting false documents in the central province of Sofala.

The 15 Malawians, including two minors, were arrested on 29 July, after being found on a bus in Gorongosa district, during police checks in the province.

The group presented false documents to the authorities, Mangazi Singano, spokesman for the Migration Service (Senami) in Sofala, told private television station STV.

According to authorities, the group was sentenced to one month in prison, converted into community services.

“[The sentence is to be] served in the country of origin, in Malawi. The Sofala migration directorate has organised their repatriation,” the Senami spokesman added.

According to Senami, the Malawians were bound for South Africa, via Maputo.
