Africa-Press – Mozambique. The European Union (EU) will remain one of Mozambique’s main development partners, Ambassador of the European Union in Mozambique, Antonio Sanchez-Benedito Gaspar, said during celebrations of Europe Day on Monday (09-05), which kick started an ongoing Europe Week in Mozambique.

The EU will also continue to cooperate with Mozambique on peace issues, either through the implementation of the Maputo Agreement signed in August, 2019, or through an integrated response to the insurgency in Cabo Delgado.

Speaking at a Europe Day event in the Fortress of Maputo attended by politicians and diplomats from several countries, Gaspar referred not only to the commitment to peace, but also to the importance of Mozambique in the international context.

“Mozambique is called to occupy an increasingly important place in the African and international context,” Ambassador Gaspar said, “and can play a key role in a strong Africa-Europe alliance, at the service of the citizens of both continents.”

Gaspar recalled that peace was the main reason for the existence of the European Union, which was why member countries were continuing to welcome victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Representing the Mozambican government, Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries Lídia Cardoso said: “Today, without a doubt, the European Union is a strategic cooperation partner, in support of the development processes in Mozambique.”

Minister Cardoso thanked the EU for bilateral cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, local development, culture, the environment, climate change and the consolidation of peace, support which had contributed significantly to the progress and well-being of Mozambicans.

Held on May 9th every year, Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historic ‘Schuman Declaration’ setting out ideas for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between European nations unthinkable.

The anniversary is also a tribute to a whole generation of European women and men who saw continental union as something both possible and necessary.
