Mozambique: Tete ‘House of Culture’ in a deplorable state – O País

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The main building of Tete province’s ‘Casa da Cultura’ and its adjacent buildings are crumbling, but the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism maintains it does not have the funds to rehabilitate the structure.

The Provincial House of Culture in Tete city is one of the main “arts cathedrals” in the country, but it’s falling apart due to lack of maintenance.

Despite the degradation, the building and its adjacent rooms are still in operation.

Dirty walls left unattended and a lack of hygiene in the toilets characterize the situation, but, challenged on the matter, the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism says that it does not have funds for rehabilitation.

The culture and tourism sector in Tete pleads that it is intent on mobilising resources from the central government to restore the enterprise’s good image.

The deplorable state of the Provincial House of Culture means that artists there are working from alternative locations in the same building.
