Mozambique: Tribute paid to literary giant Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa

Africa-Press – Mozambique. At the 7th edition of the Maputo Book Fair on Friday, Maputo Municipal Council honoured icon of Mozambican literature Ungulani Ba Ka Cossa for projecting the image of the capital city nationally and internationally.

President of Maputo Municipal Council, Mayor Eneas Comiche, bowed and paid tribute to the author of ‘Ualalapi’, ‘Orgia dos Loucos’ and ‘Gungunhana’, Ungulani, who received from the mayor a cheque for 120,000 meticais and a certificate of honour.

“When we mark the 34 years of his literary career,” Eneas Comiche explained, “since the publication of the first book by Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa in 1987, the Municipal Council of Maputo is honoured to pay tribute to this writer for his contribution to the promotion, dissemination and consolidation of Mozambican literature and culture. In both scenarios – as a Maputo citizen and as a professional writer – his contribution has been immense.”

Comiche added that Ungulani Ba Ka Cossa is, without a doubt, one of the greatest Mozambican writers. His life trajectory is a mixture of his work and the literary history of post-independence Mozambique itself, and any tribute needed no further justification.

In his own speech, Ba Ka Cossa thanked the Municipal Council of Maputo and the team that organizes the Maputo Book Fair for the work they had done with a view to recognising Mozambican writers.

Ba Ka Cossai has also written for the cinema, collaborating in the production of scripts at the National Audio-Visual and Cinema Institute.
