Mozambique: ‘Urgent to combat regional social, economic imbalances’ – president

Africa-PressMozambique. The Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, on Friday said it was “urgent” to combat social and economic imbalances, pointing to the expansion of the country’s electrification as an important lever for development.

“My government and I are in a hurry to promote a balanced development of the country,” Nyusi said, speaking after inaugurating the electricity grid of the Macaloge Administrative Post, in Sanga district, Niassa province, northern Mozambique, over 2,000 kilometres from Maputo.

The provision of basic energy, health, education and water services is essential for the removal of regional imbalances, he said and added that the country should capitalise on the enormous energy potential it holds to promote structural transformation of the economy, through a leap towards industrialisation and development of agro-industry.

Mozambique should take greater advantage of the strategic possession of energy resources in Southern Africa, positioning itself to provide these assets and help solve the region’s energy deficit.

The inauguration of the electricity grid in Macaloge Administrative Post is part of the government’s efforts to achieve the goal of universal access to energy by 2030 recommended by the United Nations.

Currently, electricity reaches 40% of the Mozambican population, with 36% receiving it from the national grid and around 4% through alternative sources.
