Mozambique: Vaccination for those aged 50 and over living in urban areas starts next week

Africa-PressMozambique. The Ministry of Health will next week start vaccinating all individuals aged over 50 living in urban areas.

Having in the second phase so far vaccinated around 240,000 citizens throughout the country, the more than 300,000 COVAX initiative vaccine doses received on Monday and those on their way are lending the health sector renewed confidence in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This new stage will cover citizens aged 50 years and over and other groups that were not covered in the other two phases of vaccination,” Deputy National Director of Public Health Benigna Matsinhe said on Monday (July 26).

Speaking during the regular weekly Ministry of Health press update, Matsinhe said that the new group would join the already immunised group of patients with diabetes, prisoners, patients in therapy and the population over 50 years old living in accommodation centres.

Matsinhe said that, together with existing stock, the vaccines that the country is receiving would be enough to complete the second phase of vaccination and move forward from there.

“Using these vaccines, we will conclude the second phase of the campaign, and will still be able to advance to a third phase, taking into account that many of the individuals over the age of 50 who suffer from various illnesses have already been vaccinated,” Matsinhe concluded.

The sector calls for all target groups to adhere strictly to prevention protocols so as to stop the spread of the disease and avoid the collapse of the health system.

With the addition of COVAX initiative vaccines, the Ministry of Health will be able to immunise more than one million people.
