Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo announced in Dar es Salaam on Thursday that his government is working to legalise undocumented Mozambican citizens who are living and working in Tanzania, as well as to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Chapo made this announcement at a meeting with the Mozambican community resident in Tanzania, as part of his three day state visit, at the invitation of his Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Hassan Suluhu.
He promised that the government will send a registration commission that will issue Mozambicans with documents such as identity cards and passports, allowing them to work legally in Tanzania.
“We have to come and work here, provide documents and legalise the situation of Mozambicans so that they can live legally in Tanzania”, said Chapo.
He said that tens of thousands of Mozambicans are resident of Tanzania, a good number of whom have been in Tanzania since the days of struggle for Mozambican independence.
Many of these Mozambicans have complained of a lack of documentation, which is preventing them from gaining access to employment and to services and preventing their children from access to education.
As for bilateral cooperation, Chapo said his talks with Tanzanian officials had stressed rehabilitating road and rail infrastructures, and stimulating cross-border trade.
This included work on the road from Palma, in Cabo Delgado province, to the border at Namoto. “We also have responsibilities”, said Chapo, “and now we are improving the road on our side, at the Negomano border, to connect with the Unity Bridge over the Rovuma River”.
