Africa-Press – Mozambique. Year-on-year inflation rose to 7.8% during January, the Mozambican National Statistics Institute (INE) announced on Wednesday (09-02).
Such a high value has not been registered in Mozambique since October, 2017.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages and transport contributed most to the rise in prices in January, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) bulletin.
In December2021, year-on-year inflation had stood at 6.74%.
As for the monthly accumulated figure, January registered a general rise in prices of 2.18%, and the average inflation over 12 months stands at 6%.
According to the most recent reports from the Bank of Mozambique, the most likely risks to inflation in Mozambique are related to the impacts of Covid-19 and increases in food and liquid fuel prices, along with constraints in the international goods supply chain.
The CPI is calculated by the INE from the price fluctuations of a basket of goods and services in the cities of Maputo, Beira and Nampula.
