Mozambique, Zambia agree to boost cooperation to combat cross-border crime

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique and Zambia have agreed in Lusaka to strengthen collaboration in combating cross-border crimes, the defence ministers of the two countries announced at the end of a meeting.

“The two countries pledge greater coordination in combating cross-border crimes such as terrorism, illegal migration, human trafficking, drugs and poaching,” a statement read.

The document summarises the conclusions of the 11th session of the permanent joint commission on defence and security on Wednesday.

There will also be a strengthening of “information sharing and training.

Cristóvão Chume, Mozambique’s defence minister, said that the defence and security forces “have the task of accompanying” the new dynamic of relations between the two countries, “ensuring that the agreed programmes” are “carried out in a secure environment.

“It is important that Mozambique and Zambia improve their capacity to act in the face of all types of suspicious and transnational manifestations that pose a threat to the normal course of the two countries,” he added.

The Zambian defence minister, Lwiji Lufuma, made a positive assessment of the meeting, which sought “viable solutions to the threats that undermine the security of the two states”.

Mozambique shares a border with Zambia in Tete province, where arrests for illegal immigration and poaching have been frequent.
