Mozambique-Zimbabwe Pipeline : CPMZ’s installed capacity increases by almost 50%

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Over the past few years CPMZ has been implementing a multi-phase capacity expansion project to serve and anticipate the growing regional demand for refined products.

In this connection, the company announced that its new pumping stations at Beira and Maforga have gone into production in January, giving the Beira–Feruka pipeline an installed capacity of 3,000,000.

By achieving this milestone, CPMZ has bolstered its commitment to supporting energy security in southern Africa in general and Zimbabwe in particular.

The new flow rate represents an increase of almost 50% on the pipeline’s previous capacity, and it is based on more efficient and safer state of–the-art technology.

The construction of the new pumping platforms, begun in 2020, has been successfully completed and, since 1 January 2024, as planned, CPMZ has been at an advanced commissioning and integration testing phase with the oil terminals at Beira port.

CPMZ pumps historic volume in January

As a result, CPMZ reached a transported volume of around 190,000 m3 in January of this year for the first time in its history.

With a new pumping capacity of 343 m3/hour, the pipeline will have a maximum flow capacity of around 8,200 m3/day. In the meantime, we are pleased to announce that, at the current commissioning phase, CPMZ is already in a position to provide the users of its infrastructure an effective capacity of 7,500 m3/day.

New phase of expansion project already under way

The various phases of the current expansion project will culminate in the implementation of two satellite pumping stations, which will enable CPMZ to expand its pipeline capacity to 5,000,000 m3/year.

Completing the different phases of this project will enable it to anticipate the growing fuel needs of the hinterland and is in line with a strategic vision shared with the government of Zimbabwe: to make (i) the Beira-Harare pipeline the preferred transporter of refined oil products to all of landlocked southern Africa and (ii) Harare a fuel distribution depot for the hinterland. •
