Africa-Press – Mozambique. The new composition of the Frelimo Political Commission, the ruling party’s most important body between sessions of its Central Committee, was announced yesterday in Matola, Maputo province, by Frelimo president Filipe Nyusi, during the closing ceremony of the XII Frelimo Congress, which ended this Tuesday.

The vote for the new members of the Political Commission started at around 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday during the Ordinary Session of the new Frelimo Central Committee, but the results were only available after 4:00 p.m., and without any prior communication with journalists.

Of the electoral results announced by Nyusi, we highlight the departure of Eduardo Mulémbwè, former president of the Assembly of the Republic; Raimundo Pachinuapa, veteran of the national liberation struggle, Sérgio Pantie, head of the Frelimo parliamentary bench in the Assembly of the Republic; Jaime Basílio Monteiro, Secretary General of the National Council for Defence and Security (CNDS); and Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, former prime minister. Deputies Ana Rita Sithole and Conceita Sortane also departed.

Alberto Chipande, Filipe Paúnde, Eneas Comiche, Manuel Tomé, Tomás Salomão, Aires Aly, Verónica Macamo, Margarida Talapa, Alcinda De Abreu and Nyeleti Mondlane stay on as members of the Political Commission.

From the election held yesterday at the Frelimo Central School in Matola, highlights include the promotion of Francisco Mucanheia, Counsellor to the President of the Republic; Damião José, former Frelimo spokesman; Fernando Faustino, Secretary General of the Association of Combatants of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLIN); and Celso Correia, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Esperança Bias, President of the Assembly of the Republic, and Amélia Muendane, President of the Tax Authority also join the Political Commission. Esperança Bias was a member of the previous Political Commission by virtue of her duties, but without voting rights.

Among those rejected for the new Political Commission are Raimundo Diomba, former secretary of the Central Committee Verification Committee, and Antónia Chara. Like Bias, Diomba was a member of the previous Political Commission by virtue of his duties, but with the right to vote.

The 16 members elected yesterday will join the party’s president, Filipe Nyusi, Secretary-General Roque Silva, and Central Committee Verification Secretary Ana Comoana, also elected during the XII Congress.

According to Frelimo statutes, the Political Commission is made up of an odd number, between 17 and 21 members. For the 2022-2027 five-year period, the body will be composed of 19 voting members. By virtue of their functions, Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane, and head of the Frelimo parliamentary bench Sérgio Pantie will also have seats on the body, but without the right to vote.

The new Political Commission is responsible for selecting the next Frelimo presidential candidate, to be discussed next year at the Central Committee’s second Ordinary Session.
