Nampula: Electoral process starts with orientation of team trainers and civic education agents

Africa-Press – Mozambique. A candidate group of 115 team trainers and civic education agents began a seven-day training course in the city of Nampula on Monday (27-03), the first stage of the municipal elections scheduled for next October.

Candidates selected from the seven existing municipalities are participating in the training. These are Nampula City, Angoche, Nacala, Ilha de Moçambique, Monapo, Ribáuè and Malema, plus Suril, which is to become the eighth municipality in the province.

The opening session was attended by the president of the Provincial Election Commission (CPE) and the director of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), Daniel Ramos and Luís Cavalo respectively.

At the end of the training, 98 candidates will be chosen, 58 of whom will train brigade members and 40, civic education agents.

CPE president Daniel Ramos asked for maximum commitment, as the success of the subsequent stage depends on the outcome of this course. “You are the ones who will ensure that the process runs smoothly,” he said.

Provincial STAE spokesperson Josina Taipo stressed the importance of the training that candidates will receive, enabling them to replicate the knowledge acquired.

Taipo said that a total of 1,113 brigade members and 650 civic education agents, assembled in 371 brigades, will be active during the electoral process in Nampula province.

He added that 456 census posts were foreseen for the municipal districts, operating during a process that starts on the 20th of April and ends on the 3rd of June.

In the last municipal elections, Renamo won five of the seven municipalities disputed, respectively the capital Nampula, Angoche, Ilha de Moçambique, Nacala and Malema, while Frelimo managed to elect mayors in Monapo and Ribáuè.

In the forthcoming elections, Mossuril, a tourist coastal zone located between the Island of Mozambique and the port city of Nacala, will be added to the seven existing municipalities.
