Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Municipal Assembly of the City of Nampula, sitting in its fourth ordinary session, has approved a proposal to increase the salaries of the Municipal Police. The salary increase attracted the votes of Renamo and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), while Frelimo abstained, claiming that the Assembly was not the proper forum to discuss the matter.

The salary increase for the Municipal Police of Nampula is presented as a way of valuing their work in the fight against crime and violations of the municipal code.

The head of finance on the Frelimo bench in the Municipal Assembly, Luís Giquira, justified his bench’s abstention on the grounds that there were bureaucratic issues still to be discussed.

Giquira says the issue was not that his party opposed the salary increase, but that the matter should rather be dealt with in a different forum.

The head of the Renamo bench in the Municipal Assembly, Salimo Paulino, explained that the members of his bench voted in favour because they consider the work of the Municipal Police extremely important.

“The Municipal Police is in charge of all supervision, and when their salary is increased because of good performance, then we must recognise it,” Paulino stressed.

Mussa Amade, from the MDM bench, supported Renamo’s position, saying: “We did not vote against this wage increase, because it is fair and it is legal.”
