Nyusi returns election laws to parliament for “re-examination”

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Approximately one month after the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, approved by consensus of the Frelimo, Renamo and MDM parties the revision of the Legal Frameworks for the 7th Presidential and Legislative Elections as well as for the 4th Elections of Members of the Provincial Assemblies and Provincial Governors, and with just over four months left until the general elections in Mozambique, President Filipe Nyusi has decided not to promulgate the two revisions, but to return them for “re-examination”.

The president has doubts concerning the constitutionality of the attempt by the Frelimo, Renamo and MDM parties to grant district courts the power to order vote recounts, and has therefore decided to return to parliament the revision of Law no 8/2013, of 27 February, amended and republished by Law No. 2/2019, of May 31st, which establishes the Legal Framework for the Election of the President of the Republic and Deputies of the Assembly of the Republic, as well as the revision of Law No. 3/2019, of May 31st, which establishes the Legal Framework for the Election of members of the Provincial Assemblies, both approved by parliament last April.

This re-examination can only be considered by the Assembly of the Republic in July, when deputies meet for the last session of the IX Legislature.
