Africa-Press – Mozambique. The residents of Magaia village, in Muidumbe district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, on Sunday experienced moments of panic after a group of Islamist terrorists invaded the area.
According to sources cited by the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, at least one person lost his life in clashes between the terrorists and members of the local militia (usually referred to as “local forces”), while other residents were forced to move in search of safer places to hide.
“They entered Magaia village at around 18.00. The situation ended up causing panic in other villages such as Muambula, Namacande, Chitunda, Muatide, Miteda and 24 de Março. All these places were in an uproar”, a local resident said.
“The villages of Nangunde and Muatide, since they are close to Magaia, were completely abandoned, because the residents were the first to receive information that the terrorists were on their way”, he added.
According to another source, “nobody slept until dawn. Some people spent the night in the bush. In Ntchinga, for example, many families took refuge in the forest. Even the District Administrator left Namacande, the Muidumbe district headquarters. He slept in Miteda and had to be escorted by the security forces.”
