Opposition criticises lack of election funding

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), the third party with a parliamentary seat, accused the government on Tuesday of trying to make the next electoral cycle in Mozambique unviable, criticising the budget deficit announced by the National Elections Commission (CNE).

“The government is not taking this process seriously, it is calling into question a serious organisation and the aims of the Mozambican people,” Ismael Nhacucue, MDM spokesman, said during a press conference in Maputo.

The issue at stake is a deficit of 2.2 billion meticais (€34 million) for holding the elections, information recently provided by CNE.

In the party’s view, Mozambique’s government intends to “make the process unviable” to “not allow the opposition to prepare”.

“MDM is concerned about this issue and we should all be concerned,” stressed the MDM spokesman.

Mozambique begins a new electoral cycle in 2023, with local elections, followed by general elections in 2024 (presidential, legislative, provincial and possibly district elections).

According to figures from the National Elections Commission released in June this year, Mozambique needed a total of 18.7 billion meticais (€287 million at current exchange rates) to cover the next electoral cycle.
