Africa-Press – Mozambique. Margarida Talapa, the chairperson of the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, has challenged the political party parliamentary groups to favor creation of laws aimed at promoting sustainable development and social peace.
According to Talapa, who was speaking on Wednesday at the opening of the first sitting of the this year, the parliamentary groups must also promote public policies that guarantee social justice through responsible legislative production.
“This session begins in a demanding context, but also one full of opportunities to strengthen democracy, reinforce dialogue, legislative production, and the commitment to serve the Mozambican people with humility and dedication”, she said.
According to Talapa, the members of the parliament are invited to show the deepest meaning of their mandate, taking into account that “parliament is not only a space for political debate, but, above all, the place where the voice of the people they represent echoes.”
“You must guide your actions with high rigor, a sense of responsibility, and profound respect for differences of opinion. May parliamentary debate be lively, plural, and firm, but always healthy, constructive, and oriented towards the national interest”, she said.
For his part, Feliz Sílvia, head of the parliamentary group of the majority Frelimo Party, advocated for greater attention from the parliament’s specialized committees in the preparation of legislation.
“The set of laws to be considered during this sitting, which could extend until next May, raises the need to safeguard the fundamental rights, freedoms, and guarantees of citizens. It is our obligation to ensure that the regulation of citizens’ fundamental rights, freedoms and guarantees respects the structuring principles of the democratic rule of law, namely the principles of proportionality, legality and separation of powers”, he said.
Sebastião Mussanhane, head of the main opposition party Podemos, said that the parliament is the heartbeat of a democratic state governed by the rule of law, which means that deputies need to be active in responding the country’s urgent needs.
“May this house continue to assert itself as a temple of democracy, where dissent is respected, oversight is exercised with courage, and the national interest prevails over political expediency. Only in this way will we honor the mandate entrusted to us and strengthen the citizens’ trust,” he said.
As in all previous sittings, polemic was largely avoided in the opening session.
