Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican Attorney-General’s Office (PGR) has given senior officials an additional 15 days to submit lists of their assets under the Law on Public Probity.
Under this law, many thousands of public officials (including government members at all levels, judges and prosecutors) are obliged to submit lists of their assets, including bank accounts, shareholdings, buildings and vehicles.
The deadline for submitting these lists was 60 days after taking office. Clearly a significant number of officials failed to do so, since the PGR has now extended the deadline by 15 days.
Speaking at a Maputo press conference on Monday, PGR spokesperson Ribeiro Cuna warned that those who failed to deliver their lists would face sanctions.
“It was noted that some of the public servants are not presenting their declarations of assets, even though they have been listed”, said Cuna. He assumed that the reason for failing to deliver the declarations on time was lack of knowledge. So the PGR was giving those who had failed to meet the deadline an extra 15 days. They would thus have until 20 May to submit their lists.
The lists of assets are supposed to be a check against corruption. However, the lists are not publicly available. They can be used as evidence in criminal cases, but it is not clear that this has ever happened.
